The design concepts for our site were inspired by “The Concise Townscape” written by Gordon Cullen. In his introduction, Cullen emphasizes how historically designers have overlooked “the speed of change” which then “prevents the environment organizers from settling down and learning by experience how to humanize raw material thrown at them.” (p.13) Considering the humanity for the residents within the design and construction of the spaces will support the individuals within the site as well as providing spaces for the community to connect while going about daily activities. To eliminate the humanly focused design trade-offs for our affordable housing, the site provides programmed spaces connected dynamically to support daily activities making them more enjoyable. “The process, be it’s in stomach or brain, is part of our human bondage” and how we “digest” our environment is critically important to consider within its design. “And so we have to make organizational changes in order that human scale can be brought into effective contact with the forces of development.” (p.13) The site’s organizational programs include a grocery, café, and a laundry room. On the first floor is the grocery commercial space, providing the community with healthy food and opportunities for connection through the connected outdoor courtyard. The laundry space and café are connected subgrade, this evolved through the considerations of the waiting time for the wash machines and dryers. Residents and visitors can utilize the laundromat and then go to the café to wait for the machines. This design hopes to encourage connection for the community and the residents. There is a garden space providing views of trees and greenery while folding and using the space within the laundromat. The first floor commercial spaces are curving concrete and glass walls formed with deep contemplation regarding the “life of the community” and “pedestrian priority.” (p.123) The moral design approaches recognize how some inhabitants of the site will be familiar with the spaces, while others will see it as more “‘foreign’ territory” and will want to explore or move through the programs differently. The materiality of the buildings communicate to inhabitants of the site the separations between public and private spaces. The terra-cotta is placed on the private upper floors for the resident spaces, while the public commercial areas and parking garage are expressed through concrete and glass curtain wall systems. “Townscape is seeing here not as decoration, not as a style or a device for filling up empty spaces with cobbles: it is seen as the art of using raw materials- houses, trees, and roads- to create a lively and human scene.” (p.166) The Wash House designed site hopes to provide affordable housing which supports the community through morally thoughtful inclusions of daily life and human connection. The Iroquois tribes are traditionally credited with the development and widespread use of longhouses, large multi-family dwellings crafted from bark or woven reed mats, and wood saplings, which are bent and layered to form the envelope of the building. These dwellings followed a modular system in which each family had their own hearth and associated living space within the building. Longhouses also accommodated storage of goods for overwintering. Their structure is largely speculative, as all evidence is based on historical accounts, archeological evidence of floor plans, and traditional building methods whose modern incarnations have been subject to heavy influence by colonizers. I’ve supposed that longhouses were built on the banks of the Detroit river in 1500 for the purposes of this project, which is plausible but not confirmed. Following the Iroquois wars the Detroit area was largely unutilized by Native Americans, as it served as an intermediate space between hostile peoples. It remained this way until the construction of Fort Ponchartrain by the French in 1701, after which Cadillac invited various Native American tribes of varying linguistic and cultural associations to take up residence around the fort in order to better serve its purpose as a trading post. For the purpose of this drawing I’ve investigated the Ottawa settlement east of Fort Ponchartrain on the riverfront, and it is likely in the early years of this settlement that the inhabitants lived in wigwams, which were typical dwellings of the Ottawa people. Wigwams are single-family dwellings that utilize similar construction methods as longhouses, but at a far smaller scale, making for more temporary, less resource- and time- intensive buildings (though they still generally serve as seasonal homes rather than mobile dwellings). My current structure adopts the modular system of the longhouse, scaled up to modern-day spatial standards, applied to the temporary housing model of a hostel. Hostels serve as a more communal alternative to hotels, with more space made available to each guest through the sharing of living spaces, food prep spaces, and restrooms. Stack ventilation shafts are modeled after the central hearths, penetrating from the ground floor to the roof in order to bring light into the interior and promote ventilation. The exterior brise soleil is modeled after the layered envelope of the longhouse, designed to capture the qualities of the layered, formed wood structure. Design should include some “Plus” program, an additional space providing a service not typical to public libraries.The design intention for the new Downtown Library sets users on a journey across the site which cumulates in the entrance to the library. The path passes by the branch of the buildings housing the “Plus” program: an Arts Library, intended to house prints for check out and artist works by community artists, an accompying public art studio, and a series of incubator spaces intended to house the work of small businesses and artists looking to make a start in the community. Upon reaching the main entrance, users can circulate through the staircase spiraling through the central core. Print collections take up the floors above, held in a place honor as the central function of the library. Below are tech functions of the library, from computer space to space dedicated to equipment lending. The bottom floor houses the children’s space, which opens to the outside, but, due to its situation below grade, is protected visually. Study rooms and meeting rooms bridge the divide between the two branches, removed from the activity of the main spaces but accessible to all areas of the building. https://claytonarvin.com/Worsh Worsh Community Laundromat 1600 Pleasant Ave, Cincinnati, OH Interdisciplinary Studio Cumulative Project: Within an existing storefront space, create a not-for-profit laundromat to serve the community of the Over the Rhine area of Cincinnati. My partners and I worked to craft an interior that not only complemented the task of laundering, but served as a place to relax comfortably. We did not simply craft space, but developed a brand identity for the new laundromat that included promotional materials, iconography, and interior elements ranging from wall graphics to signage. The goal of Wørsh is to enrich the routine and ritual of the personal chore that is washing one’s clothes. It will draw in users beyond just people that are in need of laundering services through a direct connection to the community and an atmosphere of acceptance communicated through a playful, lighthearted public image. Project:&nbsp;Conceptualize a new campus building for Miami University to serve students and provide a home for new media technologies, as well as several academic departments such as Interactive Media Studies and Computer Science.The design solution for the Miami University Student Innovation Center seeks to combine a modern, technology-oriented space with the overwhelmingly Georgian red brick architecture of Miami University’s campus. The circulation path is designed to draw students through a stepped outdoor garden space down into the spacious interior atrium, from which it is made apparent that the building is a thriving technological community. The site is adjacent to Fountain Square, a community hub and premier public space for the area.Artists for Humanity Cincinnati will be transparent in both appearance and function, and it’s integration into the community of Cincinnati will be apparent. Each inhabited interior space will be enhanced by a biophilic sunspace complemented by both direct and indirect connections to natural elements and systems, including a sunlit valley carved around the intended tower footprint through the most relevant spaces. Green walls will complement both interior and exterior space. The building will house a variety of functions, including studios, offices for partners, event space, gallery space, and street-level retail. It is important that the facade address these interior functions while considering important exterior influences, most notably the Fountain Square plaza, which is a center of public activity. Biophilic elements incorporated into the facade complement this activity as much as they complement the function of the building itself. Circulation paths through the building are diveded between interior and exterior. However, both pass through the elevated outdoor plaza just past the north facade of the building, which is heavily glazed to admit diffuse light into reading spaces and book storage areas. +0000 Clayton Arvin https://claytonarvin.com/HW-Nature-Center Hueston Woods Nature Center Hueston Woods State Park, College Corner, OH 2nd Year Studio 1st Semester Final: Utilizing a lakefront site with a steep slope, design a Nature Center for Hueston Woods that connects users with the natural environment.Simple, proportioned forms characterize the design solution for the Hueston Woods Nature Center. Revolving around an exterior courtyard, the nature center invites users to be fully immersed in nature. Major circulation paths are framed by vertical louvres of reclaimed, refinished wood. South-facing lake views are framed and shaded by the offset concrete forms as well as horizontal louvres. The building is largely finished with precast concrete panels, which, combined with its overall simplicity, provides a blank juxtaposition encouraging users to look outward to the natural world around them.
