Hueston Woods Nature Center

Hueston Woods State Park, College Corner, OH

2nd Year Studio 1st Semester Final: Utilizing a lakefront site with a steep slope, design a Nature Center for Hueston Woods that connects users with the natural environment.

Simple, proportioned forms characterize the design solution for the Hueston Woods Nature Center. Revolving around an exterior courtyard, the nature center invites users to be fully immersed in nature. Major circulation paths are framed by vertical louvres of reclaimed, refinished wood. South-facing lake views are framed and shaded by the offset concrete forms as well as horizontal louvres. The building is largely finished with precast concrete panels, which, combined with its overall simplicity, provides a blank juxtaposition encouraging users to look outward to the natural world around them.
